As a beginner to fencing, it can be quite daunting. Where do I start? Here at TUFC, we try to ensure that fencing is an accessible sport to beginners.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is fencing?

Fencing is a high-speed, high-intensity combat sport that involves the act of sword fighting. This sport has been involved in the Summer Olympics since 1896, so it’s been around for a while!

Modern fencing offers three different disciplines: foil, épée and sabre. Each weapon uses a different blade that is used in different ways. There are different sets of rules unique to each discipline, and most competitive fencers tend to specialise in one discipline. Beginner fencers will typically starting training in the discipline of foil to learn the foundations of fencers before deciding.

What will my first training session look like?

You can simply turn up to a training session of your choice, and be sure to introduce yourself to an executive committee member. We’ll get you started and introduce you to the coach.

Our coach will run you through the basics of fencing and then you’ll get a chance to put what you’ve just learned into practice. Don’t be intimidated! All of our experienced fencers are happy to assist and guide you through the excitement of having your first proper fencing bout.

What do I need to bring?

All you need to bring is yourself, activewear (it gets quite sweaty), a comfortable pair of sports shoes and enthusiasm!

Do I need to bring my own fencing gear?

Full fencing gear is available to be borrowed at each training gear. All fencers (experienced/non-experienced) are allowed to borrow what they need for the night. If at any point you’d like to invest a bit more into the sport (but don’t want to shell out the big bucks too soon), TUFC offers a gear hire program.

Anything else I should know?

TUFC generally runs according to the University of Queensland academic calendar. Therefore, our sessions usually start at the beginner of each semester and ends at the end. If there is a fair amount of interest in continuing training during Winter/Summer breaks, we might also offer training sessions during these periods.

At the moment, training sessions are based at Connell Gym at the University of Queensland, St. Lucia campus. Sessions run from 6.30-8.30PM (as of January 2023).
